Retinal regeneration with induced pluripotent stem cells
Almost all cell types of human retina can be differentiated in vitro from pluripotent stem cells. In this talk, I will introduce the unmet clinical needs from patient with retinal diseases, differentiation of retinal pigment epithelia and retinal organoids, cell transplantation in purpose of retinal regeneration in animal models as well as in blinding patients.
Dr. Jin is the professor, vice president and chief physician of Beijing Tongren Hospital which was founded in 1886, CMU and the 7th director of Beijing Institute of Ophthalmology founded in 1959. Dr. Jin accomplished ophthalmologist training at The Eye Hospital of Wenzhou Medical College and received PhD degree from Dept. of Ophthalmology, University of Miyazaki, Japan. Afterward, he worked as JSPS postdoctoral fellow and FPR researcher under Dr. Masayo Takahashi’s supervision at RIKEN Center for Developmental Biology, Kobe, Japan. In 2010, he came back China and worked at the Eye & ENT Hospital of Fudan University, and then The Eye Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University. In 2019, he decided to shift to Beijing as the director of Beijing Institute of Ophthalmology and lead a clinical and research team. In 2022, he was appointed as the Vice president of Beijing Tongren Hospital, Capital Medical University. Currently, he focuses on stem cell and gene therapy in retinal health, fundus grading and axial regulation of pathological myopia. In 2025, his team successfully accomplished a world-first clinical trial of autologous iPSC-derived RPE transplantation in patients with dry type age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
