AI for Science at the Medical–Engineering Interface: From Bioprinting to Digital Mechanomedicine

AI for Science is reshaping how medical and engineering research is organized and conducted. Using bioprinting and digital mechanomedicine as examples, this talk will discuss how AI can connect biological understanding, mechanics, engineering tools, and experimental validation. It will also highlight the emerging role of AI agents in accelerating interdisciplinary discovery and building closed-loop research workflows.

Professor Feng Xu is Dean of the School of Life Science and Technology and Deputy Director of the Health Science Center at Xi’an Jiaotong University. He also directs the Key Laboratory of Biomedical Information Engineering of the Ministry of Education and serves as Deputy Director of the National Medical Innovation Industry-Education Integration Platform. He received his PhD from the University of Cambridge and subsequently worked at Harvard Medical School and the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology.

His research integrates mechanics, life sciences, medicine, engineering, and artificial intelligence. He co-developed multiscale bio-thermo-mechano-electrical coupling, pioneered digital-intelligent mechanomedicine, and proposed the concept of cellular intelligence. He has authored four books and over 400 journal articles, receiving more than 48,000 citations with an h-index of 114.

A recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and the State Council Special Government Allowance, Professor Xu has received major national and ministerial science awards. He is also a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher, an Elsevier Highly Cited Chinese Researcher, and one of the World’s Top 2% Scientists.
