3D printed Cu-bearing titanium alloy scaffold with multi-biofunctions

Implant-related infections and nonunion of bone exist in the bone repairs, which can much affect the treatment outcomes. To overcome these clinical problems from viewpoint of the material, Cu-bearing titanium alloys have been developed that possess both antibacterial and osteogenic functions coming from the multi-biofunctions of the released Cu ions from the alloys in the body environment. The 3D printed porous titanium alloy can produce much larger surface area, which is beneficial for releasing more Cu ions and thus further enhancing the above biofunctions. This study verified that the 3D printed Cu-bearing titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V5Cu) scaffolds, Ti6Al4V5Cu, behaved much obvious antibacterial and osteogenic properties in comparison with the conventional 3D printed Ti6Al4V alloy scaffolds, which brings great application values in various bone repairs.
