Medical-Engineering Integration in Urology: Original "Bo" Techniques from Bench to Bedside
This presentation introduces our original “Bo” technological system in urology, driven by medical-engineering integration. We pioneered the 3D-printed extravascular stent (Bo-ring) for Nutcracker syndrome, which has received international acclaim and has now been extended to treat superior mesenteric artery syndrome (SMS)and May-Thurner syndrome(MTS). We also developed 3D-printed rubbing patches (Bo-rubbings) for intraoperative navigation in endophytic renal tumor surgery, a 3D-printed “cold jacket” for robotic totally intracorporeal autologous kidney transplantation, a 4D-printed mesh bag (Bo-bag) for giant hydronephrosis with sutureless renal folding, and the Bo-laser for benign prostatic hyperplasia. Clinical evidence demonstrates that these innovations enhance surgical precision, preserve renal function, and reduce complications. This talk will detail our translational roadmap from design to clinical application, highlighting the potential of personalized additive manufacturing and novel laser technologies to advance minimally invasive and reconstructive urology.
Prof. Bo Zhang is a distinguished urologist at Tangdu Hospital, Air Force Medical University. He currently serves as Vice President of the Andrology and Sexual Medicine Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, President of the Urology Branch of Shaanxi Medical Doctors Association, and Chairman of the Shaanxi Urology Alliance. With over 50 SCI-indexed publications, he was honored with the title of "People's Famous Doctor" in 2022. He is renowned for his pioneering work in medical-engineering integration, developing a series of original "Bo" techniques that have gained international recognition.
